Roman shades are truly timeless. Invented during the Roman era, these elegant shades have been around ever since. Interestingly, the Roman shade owes its origins to the Roman Colosseum. During the construction of the Colosseum, the Roman people began the practice of draping wet cloth over the windows to keep out the dust created by the project. As time went on, simple cloth came to be replaced by beautiful fabrics adorned with colorful patterns. But it was after the Colosseum was completed that the Roman shade was truly born. After its completion, a problem quickly arose. With no protection from the sun, the Colosseum was unbearably hot.
The Romans quickly went to work to develop a solution, constructing an awning-like shade with pleats that could be extended. Although it was very large and extended horizontally, out from the wall, this ancient creation is remarkably similar to the modern Roman shade.
Versatile and durable, this modern Roman shade is perfect for any room in the house. It remains one of the most popular window covering styles, and can be found in many different styles, fabrics, and materials.
